Alastair is a Chartered Physiotherapist having qualified with distinction from Glasgow Caledonian University in 2003, following on from a first-class honours degree in Sports Science from the University of Birmingham. He has worked as a Physiotherapist within a number of different organisations including the NHS, private practice and elite sport.
For the last 10 years Alastair has been working full-time in professional football with both Arsenal Football Club and more recently Charlton Athletic Football Club, where he served as Head of Medicine & Sports Science for the last 4 years, a period which included the triumphant League 1 Play-off Final win at Wembley in May 2019.
Prior to his work in elite football, Alastair worked in private practice both here in SE London (PhysioActive, 2007-2010) and a 2-year stint overseas in New Zealand and Australia (2005 – 2007). During this time he worked with a number of elite and amateur athletes from sports including rugby, cricket, swimming and triathlon. He was also part of the medical team at the 2012 London Olympic Games looking after the boxing competition.
Alastair is a member of the Association of Chartered Physiotherapist’s in Sport & Exercises Medicine and has a special interest in sporting injuries of the knee and ankle, in particular ACL injuries, as well as an interest in tendon-related pathologies.
Away from the clinic, Alastair is kept busy at home with 3 young boys and enjoys watching their various sporting endeavours, but tries to find time for running when he can (he clocked a sub 4hr time for the London Marathon in 2008, but has yet to give it a second go!) He can also occasionally be found having a tinkle on the piano!
